‘Wolf Pack’ Explorers get into the ‘pool’ – sort of

At their Monday night meeting at Mullin ny Carty the Explorers of the ‘Wolf pack’ turned out of the hall to do some camp fire cooking namely noodles and sausage.

Whilst this was going on leaders Roger and Henry set up an indoor ‘giant pool’ game. Using tennis balls and a soft ball as the cue ball and broom handles for cues.

2nd Onchan Beavers – Lawn Bowls Competition

Well done to those Beavers who attended the Lawn Bowls Competition in Onchan Park on Saturday 7 July. It was a slightly misty start, but that didn’t hinder performance or enjoyment.

Eight Beavers from both the 2nd Onchan Tuesday Colony and the 2nd Onchan Thursday Colony played two rounds of Lawn Bowls Activities – nearest the jack, in between the cones, hitting the marker etc. It was great fun and really well organised by volunteers and members of the Onchan Lawn Bowls Club in Onchan Park.

Once the two rounds had been played, two Beavers from each Colony with the highest scores then played against each other in the Final. Taylor and Oliver from the Tuesday Colony and Malane and Jayden from the Thursday Colony. They all completed one round of Activities – it was very close but the winner by one point was Oliver from the 2nd Onchan Tuesday Colony with Malane from the Thursday Colony in second place.

Oliver received the Lawn Bowls Beaver Trophy 2018 from Bev Hewson (Assistant Island Commissioner – Beavers), and everyone taking part received medals. It was a lovely morning, supported by family members. Thank you very much to the Lawn Bowls Club for hosting the group and they hope to be back next year to do it all again.

Explorers lend a hand (or two) with car parking at Tynwald Day

Explorers, leaders and adult helpers did their bit to ensure the smooth running of this years Tynwald day celebration.

The ‘Wolf Packs’ patch was the traders car park and by the end of the morning they had perfected numerous ways of directing the public to a parking spot. The one using an Explorer as a ‘sign board’ increased visibility but did nothing for the arm muscles!

Assistance required by the TT/MGP Association

The IOM TT/MGP Association has again asked for our assistance to fill the information packs given to everyone marshalling at this years Manx Grand Prix.

This is open to Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Network, leaders, helpers and parents.

The only uniform required is your necker.

Meet at the rear of the TT Grandstand for 10am Sunday, 12th. August.

We are usually finished by lunchtime. Obviously the more hands the faster the job gets done! Also, there is usually a ‘goodies bag’ for participants.

The TT/MGP association really appreciate the help of the Scouts as we do in 2 to 3 hours what used to take them a week!

Safety updates

You may have noticed more resources and communications signposting members to advice about Carbon Monoxide (CO). Following on from this we have developed a simple poster which can be downloaded and used at Scout Campsites and premises to remind people of the risks related to CO.

It would be great if you could get this displayed within your property, download it here or email safety@scouts.org.uk if you would like a version to supply to your local printer.

TT Assoc. Needs Help Filling Marshal’s Info packs

The TT/MGP Association have once again asked us for help filing the marshal’s information packs.This is open to Everyone including parents (Beavers are a bit young)

Meet at the rear of the TT grandstand for 10:00 am, Sunday 20th May. We should be finished about 12:30 pm in time for lunch. The association provide refreshments and the young people usually get a goodies bag as well.

The only uniform required is their respective neckers.

Founders day at Malew Beavers

The Beavers started the evening with a walk to the Ballasalla village war memorial where they looked for, and found, the name of 1st Malew’s founder, Elgie Jefferson.

On returning to the Scout hall ‘Wolf Pack’- Southern Explorer Unit leader Roger, who has researched and written a biography of Malew’s got the Beavers into teams supervised by Junior Leaders. The Beavers were given pictures of Jefferson’s home, parents, school, wartime activities, medals and ultimately his final resting place to put into time line order. After they had completed this, Roger gave a short explanation to each life event.

The evening brought home that although their group founder is long gone he was in so many ways the same as all of us with home, pets, family and aspirations.

North West Region Scavenger Hunt

The NW Region Scouts Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, 13th May in Liverpool. It is open to Cubs, Scouts & Explorers.

Right now, around 85 million people around the world have been made homeless through natural disaster and conflict.  ShelterBox works to change this. By providing emergency shelter and tools for families who have lost their homes as a result of disaster, they’re transforming despair into hope.

Who’s it for?

The North West ShelterBox Scavenger Hunt is open to teams of six Cubs, six Scouts or six Explorer Scouts. All Cub and Scout teams must be accompanied by a responsible adult, Explorer Scout teams may be accompanied or supervised remotely (the leader must be in the vicinity and in contact with the team). This promises to be a popular event and is available on a first come first served basis.

Event Information

The event will take place on Sunday 13th May 2018. Registration will open at 09:30 and teams will start the Scavenger Hunt from 10:00. All teams are expected to return by 15:30 and the event will close at 16:00.

Each team will be charged an entry fee of £25.00 which will cover the costs of hiring venues and purchasing the equipment required to run the event safely and successfully.

The event will take place on the streets of Liverpool City centre, starting and finishing at the Black-E centre located at just downhill of the Anglican Cathedral, on Great George Street, Liverpool
L1 5EW, approximately 5 minutes walk from the city centre and next to the Chinatown gateway.
